ITU, standardized H.264 with profile of AVC by part 10 of MPEG4 as a new video pack technology. H.264 provides much bigger pack efficiency than the pack algorithm, used until now. Existing graphic pack algorithm such as H.261 or H.263 needed a big network bandwidth to maintain the high screen quality. Two important factors having an effect on screen quality are frame speed and resolution. The visual meeting system must transmit the picture to the opposite party through the communication channel of restricted capacity. This communication channel usually doesn't provide a non-error transmission. So, the picture signal of high quality must endure the transmission error.


Users can now expect the equal level screen quality at about half of the existing bandwidth. And, H.264 allows the visual meeting continue even when the network condition isn't good by providing important improvement and powerful error-recovery function such ase increase of mutual gearing in high performance level etc.

The profile structure of H.264 - the combining of pack technology- has become much simpler. H.263 had over one million combinations available, while, in the other realization between venders, only the basic mode was used. H.264 deals with three profiles, that is, basis, main, and extension. As the basic profile provides a powerful error-recovering tool and low latency coding, it's ideal for
visual meeting application as a dynamic network such as the internet is required for transmitting the visual meeting data in a low bandwidth
H.264 technology hasn't reached commercialization, but, as DMB broadcasting by H.264 mode is scheduled, H.264 codec is anticipated to be commercialized after the next year.

H.264 has the potential to combine the consumer picture and communication picture markets, which differed from each other in former days. If H.264 circulates as is expected, the visual meeting, started from polycom visual meeting system, can be reproduced in portable movie players, TV through cable set-top box, or cam-coders. This means that 3G mobile phone can be supplied by visual meeting or cable TV. If this actually occurs, the potential and value of video may be expected to be infinite.
